During the evening of July 13, 1996 (0450 14Jul96 UTC), a storm with supercell characteristics that may have produced a tornado traversed SSE just to the east of the Denver Metro area. Check out the NIDS radar image. This is an image of Hurricane Georges as it made landfall 28 September 1998 along the Gulf coast of Mississippi. Georges is probably the most intensively studied storm on record with aircraft, portable Doppler radar, wind towers, mobile mesonets, and more collecting data during landfall.
Next, a WSR-88D image from the Front Range (FTG) radar site near Denver, Colorado showing a nearly circular outflow boundary. The boundary was propagating outward in all directions from the original cells that can be seen in the center region.
And, finally, a WSR-88D image from FTG showing the smoke plume from the Buffalo Creek fire. The fire was fanned by strong and gusty west winds. These winds were finally quelled by the passage of a weak cold front from the north.
